interstellar gown by tessa blazey and alexi freeman at craft victoria

hello! its been a little while since I updated this blog. I've been pretty caught up with making new work for several exhibitions lately. This is a recent project I did in collaboration with alexi freeman for craft victoria's craft cubed festival. the piece is titled interstellar gown and it was displayed suspended from a disco ball motor slowly revolving in gallery three at craft victoria.

a labour of love this piece took us six weeks to construct on my kitchen table with the generous help if six different interns. we were also very lucky to receive some material sponsorship from jewellery supplier koodak and also from craft victoria.

it is constructed of over 600 meters of gold plated chain and embellished with over 6000 jump rings - again all painstakingly put together by hand.

here is our statement for the piece: fit for a sci fi goddess to traverse the celestial sphere, the gown is meticulously embellished into a galactic formation. This work evokes unseen galaxies, star clusters, constellations and nebula, suggestive of an imagined artefact: a remnant of a visitation of a cosmic being.

we were also thinking about the idea of a phoenix arising from the ashes - so the wings and tail of the piece are singed evoking an asteroid travelling through the atmosphere.
